Being here in Peru, life has a timeline all of its own. it is “Manana” (tomorrow) for everything and you quickly realise that if you get worked up its just going to KILL you! So you plan for it.   Peruvians are incredibly trusting first when you do any business but make sure you count your change, cause they will happily take a Soles or two. The standard answer for any negotiation is “Soy Peruana. Tengo solo dos Soles!” (I am Peruvian and I have only s./2 – two Soles – about R6 … <so don’t take the p*ss!>) – it gets you pretty much anything!
You learn quickly. Its like Charles Darwin’s Survival of the fittest. Take driving:  as if driving from the left hand side of the car, right hand side of the road and remembering to get into the right (correct) side of the car isn’t hard enough on its own I have had to quickly learn the art or re-programming look-left-then-right-then-left again into right-left-right again. Mix that in with a healthy dose of 5 cars in three lanes, each armed with a hooter … You just have to put your gum guard in and just go. if you wait you are LAST!  Over here it is not rude to HOOT! The HOOT! doesnt vary much in duration, tone or intensity it just is and the constant cacophony could mean anything from “I am coming through!” / “hola” / “F*@# U! / “I have no brakes and no license and have less to loose if we crash” or just “have a nice day” – Our taxi’s are tame in comparision. and the coolest thing. No one actually takes it personally at all! Its like a groundhog day of Eddie Murphy’s “Coming to America” greeting …

Neighbor’s Voice: Hey, f*ck you!
Akeem: Yes, yes. Fu*k you too! F*ck you my neighbours!
And for sTuesdays? I realised that in SA, my anxiety allows me the perfect excuse to judge myself and others SUPER quick. It is a self preservation comfort zone.  it gets me going, keeps me going, and protects MY space.  It is a “blankie” that seen through my spangish version of driving a car in Peru means that i don’t really know what the hell the drivers are saying. The gaps are narrow and the action quick, the noise is over in seconds, and the driver is smiling at you at the next robot! The truth is that its NOT personal, it never is or was and increasingly seems to be a very sTuesday:South African thing. The reality is that at the next corner someone is going to cut you off again!  8-) so whenever anything happens you laugh at it. loudly, from your core, smile, and move on (literally or your gap will be taken) – It gives you 5 secs to ask wether its important enough to really REALLY get pissed at and you realise that it isnt. You remind yourself of things you are grateful for like getting into the right side of the car and making it through Mission impossible, (ghost in the traffic) in the rental car, and suddenly its not so bad.
so … in my best sPanglish. “Para ti (for you) una momento (a moment) a pensar (to think) de mi (of me) de tu familia y amigos que ti amor (of your family that loves you) pensar en todas las cosas crear cada dia (to think of all the things that you create every day ) y lo que agradecemod. (and what you are grateful for) Eres genial magicaos y seres queridos merecen brillar. (You are brilliant and magical and loved and deserve to shine.) simplemente selectionelo. deliberadeamente (just choose it. Deliberately!)
*I have been in Peru since Christmas eve spending time with Fabiana and her Family. mixed in with a week down the coast in the Desert in Paracas a few days back here in Lima and then off to Cuzco and Macchu Picchu on Friday. Back in SA on the 16th Jan ‘12.

Life through the eyes of a 2 year old

Excitement, wonder and a MASSIVE desire to learn and experience what is around him! This is what I see when I observe how my 2 year old nephew interacts with the world around him.

Every bit of driftwood he picks up on the beach is inspected like a CSI investigator on a crime scene, the joyous smile on his face while lying with his belly on the wet sand, his squeals of delight as he runs in the waves, the speed of his mind as he picks up on adult conversations……..a question about everything and a smile for everyone…….that’s what I see when I look at my nephew.

There is no doubt that life was simpler when you were younger; no bills to pay, deadlines to meet or a boss to keep happy. These are no doubt necessary things to worry about, but often they pre-occupy our minds and we get so bogged down in this daily existence. We forget to enjoy the world and people around us and to look for the wonder, excitement and joy that is everywhere! Does the world change as you get older? Or is it our perception and the way we choose to “see” the world that changes?

Its not only in my nephew that I see this enjoyment of life’s simple pleasures, but also in “Oumie” and “Oupa”. My parents seem younger and more energised sharing time with him, and I have no doubt that I am benefiting as well. So my question is; should we not focus on the simple things that really count, make a conscious decision to turn our “wonder” switch back on when it comes to viewing the world and the people in it? Would the other stuff not just take care of itself? I know I would become a better person; more fun to be around, inspired, more caring, energised, more open-minded…….younger!!

It’s nothing to do with what you do, who you know or what car you drive. But EVERYTHING about who you are, how you treat others, how you view the world and what you add to other people’s lives. Be proud of your name and what it stands for!!

If you ask my nephew who he is, he will simply tell you: I am William James McKinlay!

ITS ALL ABOUT STRENGTHS

I am in the fortunate position that my birthday is near the end of the year (it was yesterday) as it always provides me with the trigger to reflect on the year that has passed and to cast my eyes forward into the potential of the year that lies ahead.

2011 has been a mixed year for me; a year of transition from a work point of view, dealing with the end of a relationship with a very special person, and the continued reality check of a lifelong friend fighting cancer.  So a fair measure of personal hardship, which is thank fully always matched or exceeded by growth, enjoyment and progress when attempting to go through life with a positive attitude.  The last 4 months of working with LIFESTRUCK at Deloitte Consulting in Joburg, have truly been an inspirational time.  I have discovered a desire to help and work with people, that I never thought I possessed, and it has been a great privilege to work alongside a great friend in Stuart Hoy.  To be a part of seeing his hard fought dream begin to take shape into something real and tangible, is testament to great belief and perseverance!

Part of my journey of being involved in LIFESTRUCK has been an exposure to the StrengthsFinder (http://www.strengthsfinder.com/home.aspx) system that we use with clients.  This great tool and program is aimed at getting individuals and organisations to focus on identifying and developing your strengths rather than working on weaknesses (which is the traditional way it has been done).  Interestingly I discovered through the StrengthsFinder process, that one of my 5 strong themes is being:

“Futuristic – You love to peer over the horizon.  The future fascinates you.  As if it were projected on a wall, you see in detail what the future might hold, and this detailed picture keeps pulling you forward, into tomorrow.  In fact, very often people look to you to describe your visions of the future.  They want a picture that can raise their sights and thereby their spirits.  You can paint this for them.”

So there it was in front of me, on paper: a reason why I have always loved the time of year around my birthday, where I can dream up my visions for the year ahead….and ultimately energize myself for the path ahead.  2012 is going to be the year that I change my mindset, I am going to focus on MY strengths, understanding them, developing them and making them as powerful as possible.  I love what I do, but am driven to be better at it and to make a success of the opportunities that present themselves in 2012.  I believe that this strength based approach will get me a long way to achieving my goals.

So as you round off your working year and look forward to a period of relaxation and a recharge of the batteries………I challenge you to think about your strengths and what you love doing?  And why not join me in making 2012 all about building on strengths and doing more of what you love doing best!

LIFESTRUCK: Occupy your mind

I was reminded this morning that “life is in the stories we choose.” Or perhaps more aptly; “it is in the stories we tell ourselves.” (and then believe)

An early morning “irrit” (lets just be honest and call them an idiot) who cut you off in the traffic very often transforms itself successfully into an all day IRRITATION. What if, instead of showing him the finger and taking all that IRRIT with you, You chose to tell yourself a different story, what if the “irrit” was really just a means to slow you down a little, then the “hottie” that you saw earlier would catch up to you and you could laugh? and smile at them … and get a smile back and your favourite song came on the radio, then you could turn the music up, put the windows down and suck in some Jozi sunshine? It is the power of telling yourself a different story. Would your day be the same? Would being told that the project that you have worked through the night on only to be told you have done it ALL wrong take the wind from your sails or would you say ” bugger that, it’s sTuesday (Choose your own day, thats mine 8-) this is what i have learnt and how cool is this that i can apply a new skill? – l am going to make it happen”

As i tell my clients … this is the next stage of the HERO’s journey and like any other it is about the story you tell. Either you are going to apply yourself to this and believe it or not. It is either “the coolest opportunity to change the way i think about, live about and bring about” or “this is a pain in the butt”
Your choice. You are the story that you tell! One moment. Your choice.

LIFESTRUCK – a thought on Steve Jobs

Faith.

I stepped out of my own world of an early morning Skype chat with my love in Peru, my clients, Wiseman-the-insane (my boxing trainer), emails and the traffic on my little scooter to flip open my iPad, BANG! Face to face with reality of Steve Jobs,and his world.

It is not just his passing, and the sudden frailty of “life” as we know it that leaves me and us all reaching for meaning, explanation, and an anchor …  But moreover the sheer magnitude with which he believed. I am left with this vacuum between my dreams and making them happen.   What am i waiting for? have i done enough? Can i do more? How do i connect the dots going forward? 

I talk as if i know him. I don’t but i do know that i, like countless others love his technology and i know deep down that he has had an impact on not only my world by the technology i use, but also by the way i live and the way i LOVE. And by love, i don’t just mean Fabiana, or my parents or my mates. I mean doing every thing with LOVE, from the random smile to the taxi driver and picking up the sweet wrapper lying on the floor outside the reception and igniting others. 

As Barrack Obama put it so eloquently; ”The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented,”

So what of these “Dots going forward?”  - The words come from Steve Jobs’s Stanford Commencement speech.  

I am grateful.
